Principal Investigator Position Summary: A Field Technician is
responsible for assisting with archaeological field investigations,
generally Phase II and III field excavations, with occasional Phase
I pedestrian surveys under the supervision of senior staff. Field
Technicians collect data, recover artifacts, and record provenience
information in accordance with professional archaeological
standards and project-specific guidelines. This position is vital
to ensuring accurate documentation of cultural resources for
compliance and research purposes. Key Responsibilities: Conduct
archaeological fieldwork including test unit excavation and data
recovery. Accurately document provenience, soil descriptions,
stratigraphy, features, and artifact recovery following established
protocols. Produce hand-drawn maps as needed. Process, bag, and
label artifacts in the field according to project standards.
Maintain organized field notes, forms, and digital data collection.
Follow instructions from Crew Chiefs, Project Archaeologists, and
Principal Investigators to ensure consistency and quality control.
Assist in maintaining field equipment, tools, and vehicles. Work
effectively as part of a team in varied environmental and weather
conditions. Adhere to all health, safety, and ethical standards
during fieldwork. Qualifications: Bachelors degree in Archaeology,
Anthropology, or related field preferred (relevant field experience
may substitute for degree in some cases). Prior archaeological
field experience (CRM projects, academic field schools, or research
excavations) is preferred. Familiarity with archaeological field
methods, artifact identification, and provenience recording.
Ability to follow detailed instructions and maintain accurate
records. Physical ability to conduct fieldwork, including lifting
and carrying equipment up to 50 lbs., digging, and working in
varied outdoor conditions. Strong teamwork, communication, and
time-management skills. Valid U.S. drivers license with a clean
driving record and the ability to travel to project sites as
required. Working Conditions: Outdoor fieldwork in varying
environments, weather conditions, and terrain. Travel to project
areas is required. Hotel accommodations will be provided. Shared
work vehicle will be provided. Generally, work is on either a
10-day-on/4-day-off or 5-day-on/2-day-off cycle. Per diem at GSA
rates. Employment Type: Fulltime temporary with potential to
transition to fulltime permanent. Compensation: Hourly rate
commensurate with experience and qualifications. Overtime is
available but not guaranteed.
