great place to work. The Role The Senior Database Administrator
(Sr. DBA) is responsible for designing, implementing, maintaining,
and optimizing complex database environments to support critical
business operations. This role ensures data security, integrity,
availability, and performance, with a strong focus on performance
tuning, backup and recovery, scalability, and database security.
This position is based in Arlington, VA and follows a hybrid
schedule of 4 days in the office and 1 day remote. The Sr. DBA will
lead advanced initiatives including disaster recovery planning, ETL
processes, automation, system upgrades, and cloud-based database
management, while collaborating closely with cross-functional IT
teams and mentoring junior DBAs. Deep expertise is required across
SQL Server, Azure SQL, Oracle, AWS RDS, and AWS PostgreSQL within
on-prem and cloud environments. This position requires availability
during off-hours to support month-end processing, scheduled
maintenance, and to respond to critical system issues as needed.
Key Responsibilities Design & Implementation: Architecting and
setting up new databases and complex database environments.
Performance Tuning: Monitoring, identifying bottlenecks, and
optimizing database performance. Security: Implementing access
controls, security policies, and ensuring compliance. Backup &
Recovery: Developing and executing data backup and disaster
recovery plans. Maintenance: Performing patching, upgrades, and
routine system health checks. Automation: Automating routine tasks
(backups, reports, etc.). Troubleshooting: Providing advanced
support and root cause analysis for complex database issues.
Mentoring: Guiding junior database administrators. Required Skills
& Qualifications: Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science,
IT, or related field (experience may substitute). Experience: 6
years of experience in database management. Technical Skills: Deep
knowledge of SQL Server, Oracle, cloud DBs (Azure, AWS), ETL ,
HA/DR solutions (AlwaysOn, Data Guard). Certifications: Relevant
certifications (Microsoft Azure, AWS) can be beneficial. Soft
Skills: Strong problem-solving, analytical, attention to detail,
and communication skills. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Reads
and writes English as demonstrated by clear and concise written and
verbal communications. Creates and delivers group presentations on
function-related subject matter and writes reports in a clear,
concise form. Performs basic Microsoft Office applications such as
word processing, spreadsheets, and presentations. Performs basic
arithmetic skills (measurement, addition, subtraction,
multiplication, and division) to do basic calculations and analyses
such as estimating, determining averages and percentages, and
calculating totals as outlined under the Business Math Policy
(8-01) in the AvalonBay Procedures Manual. Frequently operates
general office equipment such as, but not limited to, personal
computer, telephone, photocopying machine, facsimile machine, and
postage machine. Possesses skills working with Linux systems and
ORACLE Databases. Understands and troubleshoots “N” Tier
environment issues such as Database server, App server and Web
